Green Fingers, Paws and Claws

Our topic this term is 'Green Fingers, Paws and Claws'.  We started our first fortnight with 'Ourselves'.  We wrote poems about the senses, wrote book reviews, made profiles about ourselves, found similarities and differences between ourselves and other living things and carried out an investigation on 'Do the Tallest children run the fastest?'  After measuring ourselves and timing us running, we came to the decision that they do not.  We didn't discover the next Usain Bolt, but Lili was the fastest girl and Kian was the fastest boy.

We also looked at portraits and self portraits by famous artists and drew ourselves and others.
For the last fortnight our topic has been 'Growing'. We have looked at the ways in which we change as we grow older, the life cycles of a plant, which insects help plants grow in a garden, described amazing plants and used our own ingredients to make a 'magic fertiliser'.
We grew cress seeds to see how quickly they grow and enjoyed the cress with crackers and cheese. We have also planted our own sunflower seeds.

Our topic for the next fortnight is 'Mythological Creatures'.

Science Week

As part of 'Science Week' in school we have been looking at different materials, their uses and properties. our investigation was to find which material kept hot water warmest for longer. We used plastic cups covered in foil, cotton wool, bubble wrap and one left uncovered. We predicted which one would work best. We then used thermometers to measure the temperature every 5 minutes for 40 minutes. We found out that foil was the best at keeping the water warm and the cup without the cover was the coldest. The children recorded the findings on investigation sheets.

Science Week

On Monday 17th March we visited Pontypridd Museum as part of 'Science week'. We took part in a School Roadshow delivered by XL Wales. The workshop was called 'Move that Load' and is designed to cover topics in Science and design and Technology.
The children were challenged to design and make a wheeled vehicle which could move a heavy load using the construction kit K'NEX. The children worked in pairs and the session provided an opportunity for problem solving, decision making and co-operative learning.
When the variety of machines were made, they were then attached to motors and pulled to see if they worked successfully. The children had a very enjoyable time and there has been an increased interest in using K'NEX in class.

Over the last 2 weeks we have been looking at Greece. The way they live, their culture, history and myths. We had a fabulous time trying traditional Greek dancing and smashing (tearing) plates. Afterwards we tried Greek food, we had pitta bread, koftas, olives, feta cheese, houmous, tzitzki dip and carrots, tomatoes. cucumber and pepper to dip with. Look at us having fun in our photos.
